Humanity can thank biochemist Irwin Stone for introducing Linus Pauling to vitamin C. Pauling spoke of this highly influential first contact, when Stone sent him "copies of some papers that he had just published, with the general title 'Hypoascorbemia, a Genetic Disease'. . . The 3,000 milligrams per day that he recommended is 50 times the RDA. My wife and I began taking this amount of the vitamin … (and) the severe colds that I had suffered from several times a year all of my life no longer occurred. After a few years I increased my intake of vitamin C to 100 times; then 200 times, and then 300 times the RDA (now 18,000 mg per day).

"Among the several arguments Irwin Stone presented to support his thesis that the proper physiological intake of vitamin C is 50 or more times the RDA were two that especially impressed me. . . Almost all animal species — dogs, cats, cows, horses, elephants, and so on — have continued to synthesize ascorbate. . . The second fact that impressed me is that animals manufacture very large amounts of ascorbate. The amount manufactured is approximately proportional to the body weight, and, converted to the weight of a human being, ranges from about 2,000 to 20,000 milligrams per day. Irwin Stone concluded that human beings with an average diet are accordingly all suffering from hypoascorbemia, a deficiency of ascorbate in the blood and tissues." (Linus Pauling in His Own Words : Selections from his Writings, Speeches and Interviews, edited by Barbara Marinacci. NY: Simon and Shuster, 1995). There could be no finer tribute to Irwin Stone than this.

Does Rose Water Have Vitamin C

Does Rose Water Have Vitamin C

Roses are red, water is blue, and when you blend the two together, you get a powerful beauty potion that hydrates, heals, and maintains the skin's pH balance just for you. In addition to being prime fodder for excellent poetry, rose water dates back centuries to when the Romans dropped petals in their water and wine to further connect to Venus, the goddess of love. Cleopatra, one of the first one-namers, was rumored to take goat's milk and honey baths with roses or rosechips (the berry-like fruit under the petals that are high in vitamin C, polyphenols, and carotenoids). And even today, rose water has a number of dermatologist-approved health benefits and a few incredible DIY hacks. We chatted with Jennifer Chwalek, a dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City to see how you can add the romantic ingredient to your beauty routine and life in general.

Rose water can calm your skin

"The most important skin benefits of rose water are its anti-inflammatory effects, and its antioxidant effects on free radical damage," explains Dr. Chwalek. If you suffer from acne or rosacea and are searching for a natural treatment, rose water could help.

Rose water can be used as a mouthwash alternative

Rose water has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory abilities that work to cleanse the mouth. Chwalek points to a study in which herbal mouthwash with rose water extract reduced pain and ulcers in patients suffering from aphthous stomatitis, or canker sores.

Rose water can be added to your bath

You don't have to be Egyptian royalty to drizzle a few drops into a steamy tub. "A few drops of rose water or oil will leave your skin feeling soft and smelling great," says Chwalek.

Rose water can be used in the kitchen

"You can cook with rose water!" says Chwalek. The extract is traditional in Middle Eastern food like lamb stew, rice pudding, and salads. It's also not bad in cocktails. Eater put together a comprehensive list of places (with recipes!) to try rosy libations. Cheers!

Rose water can (and should!) be added to your laundry

Chwalek recently traveled to India and shared an incredible laundry tip from her experience. "In India, the laundry service would iron my clothes with rose water," she recalled. "I loved it, all of my clothing would come back smelling of roses." A few drops alongside an unscented detergent would work, too. Or when you do press your clothes, add it into the water chamber of the iron.

Rose water can be used in DIY face masks

Because of elixir's healing properties, it's ideal for calming irritated skin. Here's Chwalek's secret recipe: "Mix chickpea flour with sandalwood powder, tumeric, and rose water for the perfect mask. If you want to make an astringent, mix apple cider vinegar with a few drops of rose water."

Rose water can be added to your hair

"You can also mix a few drops of rose water in with your shampoo or conditioner to help hydrate your hair," says Chwalek. On top of the hydration, your hair will smell like Valentine's Day, but like, in a good way.

Rose water can be used to create fragrances

Because rose is so fragrant, rose water can be used as a fragrance base. "The scent is relaxing and intoxicating and the oil can be used in combination with other essential oils to make a beautiful perfume," says Chwalek.

Rose water can be used as a makeup remover

Add a few drops of coconut oil to rose water and you have the ultimate cleanser. If you struggle with makeup removal, this works great to both remove makeup while still hydrating the skin.

Rose water can be used to destress

Spray a bit of rose water on your pillow and dose off the sleep. The idea is that you'll relax and wake up feeling totally ready to stop and smell the roses.

Common questions

It's simple. Using the Instacart app or website, shop for products from your store of choice near you. Once you place your order, Instacart will connect you with a personal shopper in your area to shop and deliver your order. Contactless delivery is available with our "Leave at my door" option. You can track your order's progress and communicate with your shopper every step of the way using the Instacart app or website.

Using the Instacart app or website, select a store of your choice near you that offers pickup, select Pickup, and then select your preferred pickup location from which you'd like to place your order.

Then, when you arrive at the store of your choice, use the Instacart app to notify us. Depending on the store, a shopper or store employee will bring the groceries to your car, or you can pick them up at the designated area.

Here's a breakdown of Instacart delivery cost:

  • Delivery fees start at $3.99 for same-day orders over $35. Fees vary for one-hour deliveries, club store deliveries, and deliveries under $35.
  • Service fees vary and are subject to change based on factors like location and the number and types of items in your cart. Orders containing alcohol have a separate service fee.
  • Tipping is optional but encouraged for delivery orders. It's a great way to show your shopper appreciation and recognition for excellent service. 100% of your tip goes directly to the shopper who delivers your order.

With an optional Instacart Express membership, you can get $0 delivery fee on every order over $35 and lower service fees too.

Instacart pickup cost:

  • There may be a "pickup fee" (equivalent to a delivery fee for pickup orders) on your pick up order that is typically $1.99 for non-Express members. Express membership waives this like it would a delivery fee.
  • Pick up orders have no service fees, regardless of non-Express or Express membership.

When an item you want is out-of-stock at the store, your shopper will follow your replacement preferences.

You can set item and delivery instructions in advance, as well as chat directly with your shopper while they shop and deliver your items. You can tell the shopper to:

  • Find Best Match: By default, your shopper will use their best judgement to pick a replacement for your item.
  • Pick Specific Replacement: You can pick a specific alternative for the shopper to purchase if your first choice is out-of-stock.
  • Don't Replace: For items you'd rather not replace, choose "Don't replace" to get a refund if the item is out of stock.

If something isn't right, you've got options. In the Instacart app or website, you can report:

  • Missing items
  • Incorrect items
  • Damaged items
  • Poor replacements
  • Early/late orders

Can Taking Vitamin C Cause Constipation

Can Taking Vitamin C Cause Constipation

Nearly 2 million American adults each year are diagnosed with cancer. If you receive a diagnosis, your schedule can quickly start to fill up with doctor's appointments, medical procedures and pharmacy visits. Creating a checklist of things to do can help keep you busy and feeling more in control. But acknowledging the effects a cancer diagnosis can have on your emotions — and healthily managing those emotions — is almost as important.

Doctors and psychologists now recognize that healing improves after a diagnosis when both our physical and emotional needs are met, says Niki Barr, Ph.D., a psychotherapist at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Texas, who consults with medical doctors, extended families and caregivers about emotionally coping with a cancer diagnosis.

Learning you have cancer is a stressful experience, and it's important to acknowledge and cope with that stress. Fully understanding how your emotional needs can change after you receive a cancer diagnosis can go a long way in helping you and your family heal. The tips here can help you support your mental health as you navigate your diagnosis and treatment.

Upon hearing your diagnosis, you might experience grief, fear or even a feeling of denial until some time has passed. "These are all normal and emotionally healthy responses, but it's all too easy to spiral out of control with fear in the beginning," says Barr. Fortunately, these tips can help you manage the anxiety and fear that come along with learning about a cancer diagnosis.

Lessen the Impact of Anxious Thoughts

Start by writing your thoughts down on note cards or in a journal. Identify the first one that's leading you to feel uneasy. For example, you might write down something like "I'm afraid of my hair falling out." Then, move onto the subsequent fear and write it down. That might be something like "People will treat me differently if they see I have cancer."

When you've identified most of your anxious thoughts, go back to the first one and write something new on the card that can help ease your stress. It should be a thought that's confident and empowering. For example, suppose you're worried about your hair falling out. In that case, a positive view could be: "I've been looking forward to getting a new hairstyle anyway." When you're feeling nervous, read the more positive strategies, says Barr.

Work On Your Internal Dialogue

It can also help to defuse all those "What if?" questions you might ask yourself, such as "What if my cancer has spread?" or "What if the treatment doesn't work?" One scary question tends to lead to another and often turns into full-fledged anxiety. Try to focus on those things you have the power to improve on your own. The next time you start asking yourself the what-ifs, substitute the upsetting ideas with this one: "Is this thought helping me or hurting me?" You can also ask, "Is this thought moving me forward or backward?" Your answers might surprise you, and they can help you move away from the thoughts that are holding you back.

Get Grounded

Interrupting periods of anxiety by focusing on small details around you can help you shift your perspective away from negativity and towards the present moment. "Look at the beautiful color of the walls in the room you're in; look at the person you're talking to, the clothes [they're] wearing," Barr suggests. Becoming very present and focused on physical details nearby helps soothe sudden anxious thoughts. Turn your focus towards absorbing the colors, smells, people and each new sound around you. Build those sensations up very clearly in your mind. You can use this technique as a distraction tool the next time you're waiting for a medical procedure or want a diversion from your thoughts.

Meditate to Music

Research shows that 15 to 30 minutes of both guided imagery and soothing tunes can alleviate deep feelings of stress about a cancer diagnosis. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) reviewed 30 clinical cancer trials that analyzed more than 1,890 cancer patients. They found that music therapy can have a beneficial effect on anxiety, pain, mood, quality of life, heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure.

The CTCA also offers many classes and therapies to help people relax, reduce stress and improve their quality of life as part of an extensive mind-body medicine program. Many centers provide calming background music during healing therapies.

What Are Your Next Steps?

You have a cancer diagnosis: Now what? Learning how to clear your mind and focus on positive thoughts is a helpful step in the right direction. Here are other soul-soothing strategies you can try.

Start Journaling and Reflecting

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology has shown that expressing your innermost feelings can reduce stress and have a range of other emotional and social benefits. Researchers aren't sure why putting thoughts down on paper is effective. Still, it allows you to process complex emotions and help you chart a way forward, whether you've been diagnosed with cancer or are taking care of someone who has.

Exercise When Possible

Exercising for 2.5 hours per week can help you beat symptoms of depression and fatigue. Among the nation's millions of cancer survivors, there are hints — but not proof yet — that active exercisers may lower their risk of their cancer coming back.

The American College of Sports Medicine hosted a medical panel of cancer specialists to evaluate this exercise evidence. It issued guidelines suggesting that cancer patients and survivors should exercise for about 30 minutes most days of the week. This exercise should be enjoyable to you but also build up a sweat. When patients and their family caregivers exercised together, research found, everyone was more likely to stick with the fitness regimen, boost their physical stamina and experience less emotional strain.

Strengthen Your Social Support System

Connecting with others who've been through this kind of emotional diagnosis already can be a source of comfort and support. Learn more about online communities and your local chapters and support groups that meet up. The American Cancer Society also suggests attending one-on-one professional therapy or its "I Can Cope" online support groups to learn more.

Gingival bleeding may indicate low vitamin C — or ascorbic acid — intake, according to research published in Nutritional Reviews.

Researchers also reported that current daily ascorbic acid (AA) intake recommendations may be too low.

"When you see your gums bleed, the first thing you should think about is not, I should brush more," Philippe Hujoel , PhD, DDS, MSD, MS, professor of oral health sciences in the department of epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health, said in a press release. "You should try to figure out why your gums are bleeding. And vitamin C deficiency is one possible reason."

According to Hujoel and colleagues, there have previously been concerns about whether the WHO recommendation for daily intake of AA to avoid scurvy — 10 mg — is enough to prevent other chronic and infectious diseases.

To evaluate this, Hujoel and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials that measured gingival bleeding tendency, other gingival health measures, AA supplementation levels and AA plasma levels at baseline.

The researchers reviewed data from 15 trials conducted in six countries — Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom — with a total of 1,140 participants. Among these participants, the medium AA supplementation dose was 222 mg, with a medial duration of 41 days.

They also reviewed data from 8,210 U.S. residents who participated in the NHANES III study and had available data on retinal hemorrhaging measures.

The researchers found that, among the included clinical trials, AA supplementation reduced gingival bleeding tendency in participants with low — less than 28mol/L — estimated baseline AA plasma levels (standardized mean difference [SMD] = –0.83; 95% CI, –1.16 to –0.49).

Additionally, they found that AA supplementation in those with higher baseline AA plasma levels — greater than 48 mol/L — did not unequivocally reduce bleeding tendency (SMD = –0.23; 95% CI, –0.45 to –0.01). Gingival bleeding was not unequivocally reduced in those with unknown AA plasma levels (SMD = –0.56; 95% CI, –1.19 to 0.06).

Among participants in NHANES III, Hujoel and colleges determined that when AA plasma levels were at a point considered to provide protection against scurvy (11–28 mol/L), there was still an increased prevalence of retinal hemorrhaging (prevalence ratio = 1.47; 95% CI, 1.22–1.77) and gingival bleeding tendency (prevalence ratio 1.64; 95% CI, 1.32–2.03) after adjusting for participants' age and sex.

They wrote that because both retinal hemorrhaging and gingival bleeding were associated with low AA plasma levels, "AA plasma levels that are sufficient to prevent scurvy may be too low to prevent systemic microvascular pathologies."

B Complex With Vitamin C Dosage

B Complex With Vitamin C Dosage

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here's our process.

Vitamin B refers to not one, but eight different vitamins. All B vitamins play a role in converting food into energy in the body. Each vitamin also has a unique role in a person's health.

Vitamin B-complex supplements include all of the essential B vitamins in one pill. Some contain 100 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of every B vitamin. Others contain higher doses of some or all of these vitamins.

Many people get all the vitamin B they need from a varied, healthful diet, but others benefit from taking a vitamin B-complex supplement.

vitamin b complex supplement
Vitamin B-complex supplements should include all of the essential B vitamins.

If a product contains the vitamin B complex, it should have some of each of the following:

Vitamin B-1 – thiamin

Vitamin B-1 is vital to the healthy growth and function of organs, including the brain and heart.

Vitamin B-2 – riboflavin

The body needs vitamin B-2 to break down fats and drugs.

Vitamin B-3 – niacin

The body needs niacin to maintain healthy skin, nerves, and digestion. Doctors sometimes prescribe high doses of niacin to help improve cholesterol levels.

Vitamin B-5 – pantothenic acid

Vitamin B-5 is essential for the health of the brain and nervous system.

Vitamin B-6 – pyridoxine

Vitamin B-6 helps the body make new red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. It also helps keep the immune system strong.

Vitamin B-7 – biotin

Biotin is essential for healthy hair, nails, and nerve function.

Vitamin B-9 – folic acid

The body uses folic acid — or folate, its natural form — to make DNA and genetic material. During pregnancy, folic acid may reduce the risk of certain birth defects.

Vitamin B-12 – cobalamin

The body's nerve and blood cells require vitamin B-12. Adequate levels of B-12 also prevent pernicious anemia, which is a deficiency of this nutrient.

Many B-complex supplements contain about 100 percent of the RDA of each of the eight B vitamins.

However, some contain very high levels of certain B vitamins. Before taking a high-dose supplement, talk with a clinician.

The following are RDAs for each of the B vitamins, in milligrams (mg) or micrograms (mcg), according to The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Older adults may require higher dosages of some B vitamins.

Males Females During pregnancy During breastfeeding
Vitamin B-1 1.2 mg 1.1 mg 1.4 mg 1.4 mg
Vitamin B-2 1.3 mg 1.1 mg 1.4 mg 1.6 mg
Vitamin B-3 or dietary equivalents 16 mg 14 mg 18 mg 17 mg
Vitamin B-5 5 mg 5 mg 6 mg 7 mg
Vitamin B-6 1.3 mg 1.5 mg 1.9 mg 2.0 mg
Vitamin B-7 30 mcg 30 mcg 30 mcg 35 mcg
Vitamin B-9 or dietary equivalents 400 mcg 400 mcg 600 mcg 500 mcg
Vitamin B-12 2.4 mcg 2.4 mcg 2.6 mcg 2.8 mcg

Vitamin B-complex supplements may help with certain health problems. If a person has any of the conditions listed below, they may benefit from taking a supplement that contains B vitamins:

Migraine episodes

Some research suggests that certain B vitamins could help prevent migraine with aura, specifically:

  • vitamin B-6
  • vitamin B-9
  • vitamin B-12

The researchers also suggest that vitamin B-2 could help prevent migraine by influencing mitochondrial dysfunction, which occurs at the cellular level.

Authors of a review study from 2017 looked at the effects of vitamin B-2 on migraine. They report that this vitamin is well-tolerated and effective at reducing migraine frequency in adults, though they recommend further research.

Depression and anxiety

Authors of a study from 2018 state that vitamin B-12 levels play an important role in the development and presentation of depression and anxiety. They report that participants with depression or anxiety had lower levels of B-12 than their control counterparts.

A meta-analysis found that B vitamins could help with depression in certain cases. The researchers said that taking some B vitamins regularly for several weeks to years could reduce the risk of depression relapse.

A small-scale study in India also suggested that B-9 and B-12 deficiencies play a role in depression and anxiety.

Skin wounds

B vitamins may help the skin heal.

One study found that, when applied to the skin, these vitamins helped wounds heal more effectively. Another study found that B-12 improved wound healing in mice with diabetes.

Canker sores

Vitamin B-12 may be helpful in treating canker sores, also known as oral ulcers. A double-blind study found that a B-12 ointment relieved pain better than a placebo.

PMS

Some evidence suggests that taking a combined supplement of B-6 and calcium improves symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

A systematic review and meta-analysis also found vitamin B-6 to be helpful in controlling physical and psychological PMS symptoms.

The following sections look at who may benefit from taking vitamin B-complex supplements.

Pregnant women

vitamin b complex for pregnant women
Pregnant women may benefit from taking vitamin B-complex supplements.

B vitamins are particularly important during pregnancy, when a woman should take in least 400 mcg of folic acid every day. Ideally, this would also occur in the months before getting pregnant.

In addition, pregnant women should be consuming folate — the natural form of folic acid — from food sources. Getting the recommended amounts of folic acid and folate reduces the risk of birth defects involving the brain and spinal cord, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Pregnant women also need plenty of vitamin B-12. Studies show that vitamin B-12 deficiency can lead to early pregnancy loss, low birth weight, high blood pressure in the woman, and fetal abnormalities.

Vegetarians and vegans

People who follow a vegetarian diet do not eat meat, including beef, poultry, and fish. People following a vegan diet do not eat any animal products, including meat, eggs, and dairy products.

Vegetarian and vegan diets can increase a person's risk of B-12 deficiency. The vitamin is present in many animal-based foods, including meat, eggs, and dairy.

People who eat eggs and dairy products may be getting the B-12 that they need from these foods, but those who eat no animal products may need supplements.

People who have had gastric bypass surgery

Individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, often need vitamin supplements.

Research indicates that this surgery increases a person's need for B-12. There is further evidence that many people need a multivitamin that includes B vitamins and other nutrients after this surgery, at least in the short term.

Older adults

People who are 65 or older may benefit from a B-complex supplement.

Research shows that older adults are more susceptible to vitamin B-12 deficiency. Some evidence suggests that having higher levels of B-12 may help slow the aging of the brain, but confirming this finding requires further research.

Low levels of B-12 and folate — a dietary equivalent of folic acid, or vitamin B-9 — may be associated with depression in older people, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis.

In addition, a study involving older Latino adults found that higher B-6 levels were linked to decreased depression symptoms.

People with other health conditions

A person with any of the following health conditions may benefit from a vitamin B-complex supplement:

  • alcohol dependence
  • an autoimmune condition, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or type 1 diabetes
  • depression
  • diabetes
  • a malabsorption condition, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease
  • kidney disease
  • HIV
  • heart disease
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • AIDS
  • cancer

B vitamins are water-soluble. This means that, most of the time, the body excretes extra B vitamins in the urine.

While a standard dosage does not seem to cause harm, excessively high doses of certain B vitamins can be dangerous. Speak with a clinician before taking very high doses of B-complex supplements.

Possible side effects of B-complex vitamins:

  • High blood sugar. High doses of nicotinic acid, a synthetic form of vitamin B-3, can raise blood sugar levels. This can interfere with diabetes medications. People with diabetes or high blood sugar should not take high doses of nicotinic acid (measuring 1,000 mg or more).
  • Excess nicotinic acid. Too much nicotinic acid can also cause low blood pressure, fatigue, headaches, rashes, and liver damage.
  • Excess nicotinamide. High doses of nicotinamide, another form of vitamin B-3, can cause diarrhea and increased bleeding. This can occur in doses of 500 mg per day. Doses higher than 3,000 mg can cause vomiting and liver damage.
  • Excess folic acid. Taking more than 1,000 mcg of folic acid a day can mask a type of anemia caused by vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Taking a high-dose B-complex supplement can also turn the urine bright yellow. This effect is temporary and harmless. Once the kidneys get rid of the extra vitamins, the color will return to normal.

A doctor may recommend a certain type of this supplement, depending on a person's health needs.

Some vitamin and supplement companies use independent quality testing of their products. Those that pass may have a seal of approval from an independent testing organization.

This seal does not guarantee that the product is 100-percent safe or effective for everyone, but it means that the product contains what is listed on the label without contaminants.

Some testing organizations and their certifications include:

  • ConsumerLab.com's approved quality product seal
  • NSF International's dietary supplement certification
  • the verified mark of The United States Pharmacopeial Convention, or USP

In most cases, vitamin B does not interact negatively with other medications. However, certain medicines can make a vitamin B deficiency more likely.

These are some examples of medications that can result in low levels of specific B vitamins:

  • Blood pressure drugs and chemotherapy drugs can lower a person's B-1 levels.
  • Antiseizure medications used for epilepsy can lower B-3, B-6, and B-9 levels.
  • Drugs that treat tuberculosis can cause low levels of B-3 and B-6.
  • Certain cancer drugs can lower B-9 levels.
  • Certain drugs that treat ulcerative colitis can cause low levels of vitamin B-9.
  • Certain antibiotics and medicines for ulcers, diabetes, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, may lower B-12 levels.
